October 2018

From the Office:

Several attorneys from BKR attended the Indianapolis Bar Foundation’s annual Evening Under the Stars Gala on Friday, September 21st. Over 300 lawyers, judges, and guests attended the Gala at Crane Bay in Indianapolis, which included dinner, a silent auction, and a live auction. The Foundation funds several pro bono initiatives, providing services to those in the Indianapolis community who might not otherwise have access to legal assistance. In addition to being its largest fundraiser of the year, the event also commemorated the Foundation’s 50th Anniversary. Nissa Ricafort (second from left) served on the planning committee. She, along with Erin Durnell and Melanie Reichert (center and second from right, respectively), currently serve on the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Also in attendance were Melissa Avery (left) and Jennifer Hostetter (right).

The American Bar Association Family Law Section held its Fall meeting at the JW Marriott Resort in Tuscon, Arizona. The FLS meetings bring together attorneys who focus on family law and assisted reproductive technology (ART) law for networking and education. The Tuscon meeting, held October 3-6, is the first meeting of Melissa Avery’s term as Chair of the FLS. Melissa Avery, Nissa Ricafort, Melanie Reichert, Amanda Blystone, Erin Durnell, and Jennifer Hostetter all attended the meeting. Melanie Reichert presented regarding the current law in different states addressing “double-dipping,” in which the same funds are counted as both income for calculating support and assets to be divided in divorce.

The Boone County Bar Association is excited to announce their upcoming CLE presentation on November 2, 2018, at the Boone County Courthouse. This year, they will have selected speakers from around central Indiana to update us on current changes and legal trends in a variety of practice areas. Early registration is now open for Boone County Bar Association members. Space is limited, so reserve your spot today by filling out the attached form and returning it with payment. Jennifer Hostetter is the current President of the BCBA and Melanie Reichert will be speaking on Personality Disorders in Family Law: Manage the Crazy without Losing your Mind.
