From the Office:
In 2015, Erin Durnell served on the Local Organizing Committee for the Big Ten Championship Football Game, coordinating Venue Hospitality (food and beverages for the teams, coaches, officials, bands, spirit squads, Big Ten staff, and the press). This was Erin’s 4th year on the LOC in the game’s 5-year history. Game day was December 5th and Erin’s committee included BKR’s own Jesse Pace and Melissa Avery.
On December 9, 2015, Erin Durnell and John Broyles, a BKR immigration attorney, presented at the Indianapolis Bar Association’s 2015 Survive & Thrive, a full-day continuing legal education seminar aimed at solo/small firm and newer lawyers. John and Erin spoke at the session entitled “Changing Demographics: Indiana Immigrants and the Law (Work, Family and Criminal).” Erin’s discussion was focused on Special Immigrant Juveniles (SIJ), a fascinating area of the law which intersects State courts with Federal regulations. SIJ status allows minors who are the victims of abuse, abandonment or neglect to “fast track” their application for a green card, and helps protect these children from further harm. Erin works closely with BKR’s immigration practice to assist children in securing the appropriate court orders to be able to apply for SIJ status.
Melissa Avery was named Co-Chair of the Indiana Fellows of the American Bar Association. The Fellows is an honorary organization of attorneys, judges, law faculty, and legal scholars who have been elected by their peers to become members of The Fellows. They have demonstrated outstanding achievements and dedication to the welfare of their communities and to the highest principles of the legal profession. The Fellows support the research work of the American Bar Foundation through their annual contributions and sponsor seminars and events of direct relevance to leaders of the legal profession. Established in 1955, The Fellows support the research of the American Bar Foundation. Membership in The Fellows is limited to less than one percent of lawyers licensed to practice in each jurisdiction. Members are nominated by Fellows in their jurisdiction and elected by the Board of the American Bar Foundation.
