November 2017

From the Office:

  • Melissa Avery is attending the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Annual Meeting in Chicago on November 10-13 where she will be completing her second term on the Board of Governors.
  • Several of our family law attorneys have recently been selected for leadership positions in the American Bar Association’s Family Law Section. Jennifer Hostetter is the Vice-Chair of the Law Practice Management and Technology Committee and Melissa Avery is the Chair of the Nominating Committee. These leadership positions provide our attorneys the opportunity to be on the forefront of emerging family law issues and to work with respected family law practitioners from across the country.
  • Mike Wilkins, Nissa Ricafort, and Erin Durnell represented a father from the African nation of Mali in a recent international custody case before the Indiana Court of Appeals. The case involved an issue of first impression regarding the application of the Uniform Child Custody Juristiction and Enforcement Act (UCCJEA) in recognizing a foreign country’s child custody order. Nissa and Erin represented the father in the complex trail court proceedings, which lasted 5 days over the course of several months, successfully arguing that the father’s custody order from Mali is valid and should be enforced in Indiana. Mike Wilkins presented father’s argument during appellate oral argument and the Court of Appeals recently affirmed the trial court’s decision; the opinion can be found here: https://www.in.gov/judiciary/opinions/pdf/10251701ra.pdf.
  • Please note that our office will be closed Thursday, November 23rd and Friday, November 24th for the holiday weekend. We are thankful for the opportunity to represent our clients in their legal matters and we wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving!
